Artists Commissions Brief

Certain Blacks is an arts development organisation formed to support the growth of diverse artists. The organisation supports performance, live art, music and theatre, elevating the creative voice of our multi-cultural society. The organisation aims to provide more global majority led performance and touring work in the UK and beyond.

We have exciting opportunities for artists to create work for Ensemble Festival in The Royal Docks London. The commissions are supported by The Royal Docks Cultural Team and should be work that has relevance to the area and may include themes of environmental responsibility, diversity, modern living, and cultures impact on everyday life. Certain Blacks is looks to work with diverse artists from the widest backgrounds.

We are offering 4 new artistic commissions for artists to develop original work to be
presented at Ensemble Festival, an outdoor community festival led by Certain Blacks in The Royal Docks, Newham, on 22nd-23rd July 2023.

Ensemble festival is designed for local people, creating accessible, safe outdoor space for audiences and artists, contributing to growing the local economy. Certain Blacks is part of the Without Walls consortium, a national network of outdoor arts festivals. Ensemble festival presents work with our national partners, Without Walls consortium and attracts local and regional audiences.

We welcome expression of interests from a range of creative practices (music, circus performance, dance, Spoken word, theatre and live art to develop new works accessible to a cross-section of audiences to be free in an outdoor location.

The artists will be paired with a creative producer to support the development of their new piece of work, approximately 15 – 20 mins in length, to present at the Ensemble festival on 22nd and 23rd July. Work needs to be adaptable to various outdoor locations.

We are looking for artists who:

  • ●  Have been involved in developing professional work/have a professional track record of making art and performance.
  • ●  To test, explore and develop innovative, creative work to a high quality to be presented at Ensemble Festival.Covers
  • ●  Up to £4000 per commission (inclusive of artists’ fees and expenses)
  • ●  Working closely with our Creative Producers, supporting commission needsHow to Apply

● Write a short expression of interest (max of 2 A4 pages) including a brief outline of the creative idea, CV/ history of creative engagement and rough budget
