Ensemble Festival 2025 takes place from Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 of July in the heart of the Royal Docks, bringing an explosive mix of circus, theatre, dance, installations and outdoor performance.

This year marks the 6th Ensemble Festival with a programme of national and international work and commissions with our partners Without Out Walls and the Royal Docks. Ensemble Festival is produced by Certain Blacks, a diverse-led arts development organisation based in Newham, East London. The company supports the work of diverse artists from many different cultural, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, life experiences and life choices.

Job title: Festival Producer

Reports to: Senior Producer, connecting with festival team (Artistic Director, General Manager, Festival Producer, Production, Marketing, etc.)

Fee: £1,557 based on £175/day for 9 days (5 days planning, development and evaluation, 4 days festival delivery)

Contract Dates:  June 18 – August 8 2025

Key dates / On-site activity: 21 July (training tbc), 26 and 27 July (festival days).

Place of work: Based in the Certain Blacks Office, at Unit 16d, The Factory, 5A and 5Pt Thameside Ind Estate, Factory Road, E16 2HB, with remote working and weekends/evenings as appropriate.

Terms:  This is a freelance contract, and the post-holder is responsible for their own tax and insurance. 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a versatile and hands-on Producer to join our busy festival team and play a crucial and supportive role in our upcoming Ensemble Festival, happening from 26 – 27 July at the Royal Victoria Docks. The Producer will work closely with the Senior Producer to organise and deliver elements of the programme, with specific responsibility for trainee festival assistants and overseeing the new commissions programme. 

This post is being supported by the Royal Docks Team as part of the development of the Cultural and Creative workforce in the local area and will be supported by Certain Blacks Senior Producer.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

General Festival Management

  • Support the Senior Producer in the organisation of the festival: gathering, collating, and disseminating artists’ information (marketing, technical, accommodation, parking, catering and access needs).
  • Support the Festival Production Manager in sourcing and collating local information, equipment, and materials for production where necessary.
  • Support the Certain Blacks team in managing audience and artists’ evaluation, collection, and collation with festival assistants.
  • Attend staff meetings and share the development of areas of responsibility with the wider team.
  • Support the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Environmental Sustainability action plans.

Festival Assistants

  • Recruiting a team of 10 local festival assistants to work across the weekend, including creating the call out, digital sign up and selection process.
  • Supporting the Senior Producer in delivering a training day for the assistants in the week leading up to the festival, including organising content, printouts, lunch, and venue hire.
  • To schedule the assistants, work shifts, ensuring all performance spaces and areas such as the artists’ green room and info tent are staffed, and the workload for assistants is balanced and appropriate for the level of experience.
  • Managing the festival assistants on the event day, and ensuring they comply with agreed protocol and deliver agreed tasks.
  • Collating feedback and invoices for assistants’ payments.

  • Work with artists to develop 2 new commissions, supporting all logistics from planning to the final presentation of the new work at Ensemble Festival.
  • Sourcing and collating local information, equipment, and materials for the commissions, where necessary.
  • Manage and share information about each commission with the Festival Producer and the wider festival team.
  • Develop all health and safety requirements, such as risk assessments and public liability insurance cover, with support from the Senior Producer.
  • Ensure all technical and health, and safety documentation is shared with the Festival team. 
  • To manage and update commission budgets and discuss any potential budget variances with the Senior Producer and Artistic Director.
  • Help source rehearsal space for commissioned artists, if applicable.
  • Support the marketing team around campaign plans; this includes collating and creating production copy, press releases, biogs, images, social media handles and any other info required.
  • Support the team in managing artists’ evaluation, collection, and collation.
  • Attend staff meetings and share the development of areas of responsibility with the wider team.
  • Support the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Environmental Sustainability action plans.

Certain Blacks is led by founding CEO / Artistic Director Clive Lyttle, who is supported by two freelance part-time Producers (executive and assistant)

The organisation is now undergoing a period of growth and looking to develop its organisational capacity and staffing structure, including a part-time Marketing and Sponsorship role and a part-time General Manager, both PAYEE roles.

Job Description Post
General Manager Reports to:

CEO / Artistic Director and Board

Main Contacts:

CEO / Artistic Director, social media/Marketing Officer (to be appointed), Freelance PR, Freelance Festival Producers, Associate Producers and Festival Trainees.

Role:

To support the Company’s strategic growth and functional development, establishing policy and implementing comprehensive processes to ensure ongoing sustainability and financial viability.

Main Responsibilities: Strategic Management

  • Work with the CEO/Artistic Director (AD) to devise, develop and implement the organisation’s Business Plan, and Outputs, and Investment Principles as agreed with Arts Council England.
  • Review and update company policies and procedures (such as Safeguarding and Risk Assessing) to ensure robust systems, best practices, and current legislation compliance.Financial Management

• With the AD, prepare the annual budget for approval by the Board.

Work with the AD to ensure that budgets are appropriately set and met, that effective financial systems and procedures are in place and that revenue is maximised with timely and accurate reporting to the Board.

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor policies and procedures to promote best practice, ensuring that the Company conforms to all financial, legal, statutory, and contractual requirements.
  • Collect data and monitoring information required by ACE for NPO funding and by other funders as required, and oversee the delivery of quarterly returns and annual submissions.
  • Contribute to company fundraising activities where necessary. Relationship Management
  • Foster strong, effective relationships with key partners, including core funders and commissioning partners.

Creative Producers Brief

Certain Blacks is an arts development organisation formed to support the growth of diverse artists. The organisation supports performance, live art, music and theatre, elevating the creative voice of our multi-cultural society. The organisation aims to provide more global majority led performance and touring work in the UK and beyond.

Creative Producer Role

We are looking for 2 freelance Creative Producers to join our team at Certain Blacks.

The creative producers will manage 4 new commissions which may feature music, live art, theatre, spoken word or circus, for the Ensemble Festival.

Ensemble Festival, an outdoor community festival led by Certain Blacks in The Royal Docks, Newham, 19-23 July 2023. The festival presents work with our national partners, Without Walls consortium, attracting local and regional audiences.

The 2 freelance Creative Producers will ensure the new art commissions are deliverable to a realistic timeline, budget and of the highest quality. As a team, at Certain Blacks’ team will agree on how best we will work collaboratively to produce a successful Ensemble Festival 2023.

  • ●  Work with artists to develop new commissions, supporting all logistics from planning to the final presentation of the new work.
  • ●  Manage and share information about each commission with the production and festival team
  • ●  Ensuring all risk assessments, health and safety, insurance, DBS checks, policies and processes are in place for commissioning artists.
  • ●  To manage and update commission budgets, discuss any potential budget variances with the Senior Producer
  • ●  Help source rehearsal space for commissioned artists if applicable
  • ●  Support Certain Blacks’ marketing team around campaign plans; this includes collating and creating production copy, press releases, biogs, images, social media handles andany other info required.
  • ●  Support the Certain Blacks’ team in the run-up to Ensemble Festival and on the festival day
  • ●  Work with the Certain Blacks’ team to support individual commissions and overall festival evaluationSkills
  • ●  Proven experience working with Artists or arts-based projects timelines from start to finish.
  • ●  An understanding of financial literacy, experience in managing projects budgets
  • ●  Positive attitude and relationship management to support artists develop their artisticambitions creatively and logistically.
  • ●  Must be a self-starter able to manage time, workload and commitments.
  • ●  Must be comfortable with working independently, managing a range of relationships, and have good communication skills.
  • ●  Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
