The festival’s finale sees circus performance created with festival partner Victoria Amedume of Upswing Aerial Circus. This night of new work utilises Hoxton Hall’s atmospheric space and includes Out of Order, Symoné and Joana Dias and more to provide an evening of circus beyond the norm. Expect roller skates, Chinese pole work and feats via aerial silks woven into stories of birth, race, gender and the cabaret at the end of the world. Host: Athena Kugblenu Athena is a nominee for the 99 Club Female Comedians’ Bursary and a former BBC New Comedy Award Finalist. She has written for Radio 4’s News Quiz, The Now Show and multi-cultural sketch show Sketchtopia. In she 2017 she performed at the Johannesburg international Comedy Festival and followed that with her debut hour, KMT, at the Edinburgh Fringe. Her second celebrated hour was Follow the Leader, a political show with a personal twist. She’s supported Daliso Chaponda, Nish Kumar and Fern Brady on tour. A regular co-host of The Guilty Feminist, she also makes appearances on Radio 4 staples such as Comedy Club, Museum of Curiosity, Loose Ends and Arts Club. She’s also a regular on BBC Scotland’s Breaking the News. She’s the host of new podcast Keeping Athena Company, interviewing interesting people whilst eating fried plantain. It’s a great excuse for her to eat fried plantain for work.
Out Of Order: Once Standing – 30 minutes extract The world has come to an end. Civilization as we know it has ceased to exist. The last two people left on Earth turn to imagination and resilience to start from scratch. Aerial circus, physical theatre and dance combine in this daring post-apocalyptic tale.
Joana Dias: 89 – scratch performance Joana is a Portuguese dancer, singer and circus artist, she graduated from NCCA in London 5 years ago. Joana is in the process of creating her first debut solo show called 89 with director Victoria Amedume. This autobiographical theatre / circus piece will explore identity, heritage and the impact of trauma on memory.
Sadiq & Hauk: The chosen Haram – extract The Chosen Haram. Alcohol. Premarital Sex. Tattoos. Gambling. Certain hairstyles and clothing lengths. Music with instruments. Toys that resemble living things. Adoption. Making friends with the opposite gender. Dancing. Refusing sex to your husband. Pork. Homosexuality. A gay man’s narrative.
Amelia Cavallo AKA Tito Bone: A Day in the life of a blind drag king – scratch performanceTito Bone, blind bisexual drag king, underrated sex god, takes you through his daily routine. He wakes up, does his favorite type of work out – 80’s inspired aerial silks. He then professes his love to his favorite being in the world, his white cane. He does this through song and dance. Finally, after a montage of some of Tito’s favorite hobbies which include but are not (currently) limited to botany and baking, he prepares for bed where he sleeps by taking his true form, that of a sexy drag bat. (Again using aerial silks) – This piece will have integrated audio description throughout developed with support from Quiplash and Extant Theatre.
Symoné: UTOPIAN (terms and conditions apply) 30 minutes extract The Utopian explores Symoné’s personal experience living inside a cult. She invites the audience to join her in a journey of altered realities, manipulation of the mind. Told through a multitude of circus skills with influences of American rave culture and ballroom dancing (Voguing). Symoné is a queer multidisciplinary circus artist and dancer, renowned for fusing multiple circus disciplines together and bringing a club-like energy in her performances, owning her roots as an underground raver in high-end shows around the world.
