ARTIST OPEN CALL

By CB News

ARTIST OPEN CALL
International co-creation exchange Senegal – UK 2026.

Dancers, choreographers, theatre-makers, circus artists, physical theatre performers, writers based in London – we want to hear from you!

Certain Blacks have recently partnered with the KimpaVita – a cultural, pan-African, feminist and eco-responsible initiative supported by the Collektif Sankarista to co-commission a performance to be presented in Senegal and the UK in 2026.

Founded in 2021, the KimpaVita aims to raise awareness and mobilise the general public and civil society organisations in support of women’s rights in Africa, by promoting cultural activities in an eco-responsible pan-African approach. Find further information about the KimpaVita HERE.

They will celebrate the 7th edition of their festival on the 30th and 31st of January 2026 at the Maison de la Culture Douta SECK in Dakar. Each year, the festival features a particular culture from an African country or a nation with African roots. For this edition, the KimpaVita festival has selected Congo-Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) as a spotlight for the programme, explored through a feminist and ecological lens.

We are looking for a London-based artist from a Congolese background or whose artistic practice connects with Congolese culture to take part in the co-creation of a co-commissioned performance developed between Dakar and London.

We especially invite women and gender-diverse artists — including cis and trans women, as well as non-binary and gender-expansive individuals who identify with women’s experiences — who are developing their practice as dancers, choreographers, theatre-makers, circus artists, physical theatre performers, or writers, or whose work blends different forms of performance.

This opportunity is intended to support women and gender-diverse people underrepresented in the performing arts.

About the co-commissioned process

The selected artist will collaborate with a dancer based in Dakar and will take part in a one-week Research and Development to co-create the performance and present a work-in-progress sharing as part of the KimpaVita festival.

Then, the Dakar-based dancer will travel to London to continue the Research and Development and present a continuation of the work in Certain Black’s indoor festival, Black Athena, happening in March 2026 at the Rich Mix.

Come on in People Powered Places Newham

By CB News

Come on in
People Powered Places
Newham

We’re planning something special for Custom House!

People Powered Places is a Newham programme that puts local people at the heart of decision-making. It’s about giving residents a say in how money is spent. With over 300 community projects funded so far, it’s already making a big impact on the borough.

In November, Certain Blacks is joining this participatory democracy movement with the project Come on in to transform Cundy Park – Custom House into an arts and community hub.  Voting will be from 1st to 30th November. Let’s make it happen!

Come On In

Come On In is a new project designed to bring people together in Cundy Park through the arts.

Through a programme of creative workshops and events, the project will bring artist-led experiences to the heart of the community. Activities will include dance workshops led by Sonia Sabri, Hip Hop and rap sessions, theatre, and music.

Beyond the performances, the aim is simple: to make the park feel alive, safe, and loved again. We want local residents — especially young people and families — to feel proud of the space, and to feel encouraged to use it as part of daily life.

This builds on Certain Blacks’ existing work in Newham, such as the Ensemble Festival Assistants Programme, which supports residents to develop skills and paid experience in the arts.

A highlight of the project will be The Kiosk— a relaxed installation where local stories are shared over coffee and cake. It will offer a space to talk, listen, and exchange memories of Custom House— a place to simply come on in.

WHO’S IT FOR

Come On In is for residents of Custom House and Canning Town.

Research from Health in Mind and Arts Council England shows that even small acts of creative participation can improve wellbeing — and that’s what we hope to foster here through weekend events and dance and craft workshops.

WHY IT’S NEEDED

Through our outreach work in previous community projects such as The Big Manor Park Community Get Together, and ongoing collaborations with The Renewal Programme, Custom House Book Project, and Royal Docks Community Programme, residents consistently told us they want more cultural activity close to home.

Audience surveys from our Ensemble Festival in 2025 echoed the same message — people want to see art in local spaces and have more chances to get involved.

LOCAL PRIORITIES

Come On In supports key Newham Community Neighbourhood priorities, including:

Health and Wellbeing
Arts and movement have proven benefits for both body and mind. The dance workshops will promote healthy activity, while the events create a sense of joy and shared experience.

Community Safety
By animating Cundy Park with regular, friendly activity, we can help shift perceptions and make it feel safer and more welcoming.

Youth Empowerment
Workshops in dance, music, and spoken word will give young people creative outlets and a chance to express their ideas and stories in a positive space.

POSITIVE IMPACT

Cundy Park is currently underused and can feel uninviting. This project will help reclaim it as a shared, vibrant community space.

By hosting performances, workshops, and installations, we’ll create opportunities for connection, creativity, and wellbeing, while giving local people ownership over their public space.

Come On In also aims to strengthen community ties between residents and local businesses.

SUPPORTING LOCAL GROWTH

Working with local partners, including the Royal Docks Team, youth hubs, and local businesses, the project will help animate the local area and support its economic activity.

Certain Blacks’ annual Ensemble Festival employs local people as festival assistants who are paid the London Living wage, and by placing an aspect of the festival in the park, we can extend this work. The programme will engage with local traders to provide stalls for the festival events and support local economic growth

By developing Cundy Park as a community venue, we’ll also support Newham Council’s ambitions for safer, greener, and more active neighbourhoods.

These events will provide positive, local activities — particularly for young people who have limited access to creative opportunities nearby.

WHY US?

Certain Blacks is a locally based arts organisation. Founded by Clive Lyttle, a long-time Royal Docks resident, Certain Blacks has been producing festivals and arts programmes in Newham for over a decade.

Our team is experienced in community arts, event management, and artist development, and we work closely with partners across the borough to make creative projects accessible to everyone. We’ve delivered major events such as Ensemble Festival since 2019, and our intention is to include Cundy Park in future editions.

Certain Blacks is also part of the Without Walls national network of outdoor arts commissioners, connecting our local work to a wider community of festivals and artists across the UK.

READY TO VOTE?

The People Powered Places’ Big Vote is launching on 1 November and runs until 30 November. Be part of deciding how £200,000 is spent in your neighbourhood by voting for the TEN of your favourite projects that matter most to you!

Here’s how you can take part:

Join your local Big Vote event taking place throughout November. Click here to find your local event.

Vote online on Newham CoCreate. This will be open from 1 November.

Visit your local library or community centre – staff can help you vote.

Best Friends - Park Theatre

Best Friends – Park Theatre – 17 October 2025

After a sold-out performance at Afro Futures Festival (Rich Mix) earlier this year, Certain Blacks’ long-time collaborators, Crying in the Wilderness Productions, present Best Friends.

Written and directed by Paul Anthony Morris, the play is a heartfelt drama that celebrates the power of our friendships. First performed at Park Theatre in 2024, the show returns this autumn in a vibrant showcase that paves the way for its debut production.

Martin and Tyrone check into the Sacred Life Retreat Centre for assisted dying, intending to spend Martin’s last 24 hours together. But as long-buried tensions start to re-emerge, their carefully managed plans for Martin’s smooth transition begin to fall apart. With time quickly running out, our protagonists must come up with a plan to reconcile their differences or part ways in anger and regret.

Best Friends by Crying in the Wilderness Productions balances humour and sensitivity in this poignant theatre piece delving into the subject of friendship and assisted dying, a highly relevant topic in today’s England.

Featuring an award-winning team of cast and creatives from the US, UK, Canada and China, this innovative theatrical showcase seamlessly blends staged reading and live performance, music, dance and sound design. This fusion reveals the artistry behind theatre-making while immersing audiences in a gripping live drama.

Call Out: Join Certain Blacks’ Creative Youth Panel

Calling all creative young people aged 18–25

Are you curious about the arts? Do you think creatively and want to make a difference?

We are inviting young people to join a youth panel as part of Certain Black’s engagement programme Engineers of the Imagination.  The youth panel will collaborate with the team to shape the presence of outdoor arts and participation in local neighbourhoods.

The Youth Panel and Why it Matters

The Youth Panel is a group of creative and like-minded young people interested in arts, and their surrounding communities. The Youth Panel is at the heart of our engagement programme.

Together, we’ll explore questions like:

  • How can outdoor arts better serve our communities?
  • What would truly inclusive, accessible programming look like?
  • Who else needs to be part of this conversation?

No experience needed, just bring your voice, perspective and a collaborative spirit! We particularly encourage applications from young people from Beckton, Newhan and Custom House but are open to young people applying from other areas.

Who We Are

Certain Blacks is an arts development organisation rooted in East London. We are dedicated to supporting artists from all dimensions of diversity, including different socioeconomic, ethnic, gender and neurodiverse identities. We firmly believe in nurturing long-term relationships with artists, arts organisations, venues, festivals, and promoters, as they are integral to our mission. With a focus on live art, dance, music, theatre, and digital platforms, our goal is to secure lasting investments in diverse works, enabling them to tour and perform not only in the UK but also internationally.

At Certain Blacks, talent development plays a crucial role in our work. We provide emerging artists with professional space and support to showcase their work on a national scale. We understand that individuals from minority communities often face barriers in their creative journeys, experiencing exclusion and limited opportunities. As an organisation that represents excellence, we offer a platform for both new and established artists to expand their professional horizons by working in diverse environments and connecting with broader audiences.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Certain Blacks. As we commemorate a decade of supporting diverse artists and offering a national platform for underrepresented voices, our mission for 2025 is to cultivate lasting relationships with individuals, local communities, organisations, and initiatives where we are based, ensuring that outdoor arts thrive and resonate with all.

About Engineers of the Imagination

Engineers of the Imagination is Certain Blacks’ Audience Engagement Programme. It aims to transform the landscape of outdoor arts engagement in Custom House, Beckton, and Newham by empowering a group of young people -the Youth Panel- to become community leaders and ambassadors of our Ensemble Festival. Through innovative programming inspired by radical performance practices, we seek to create inclusive, accessible experiences that celebrate diverse voices and foster community connections. To see some of the work from our previous festivals check out our 2024 programme.

This is an opportunity for learning, exchange, collaboration and co-creation. Participants will receive mentorship, hands-on learning opportunities, and direct access to artists and producers in the outdoor arts sector.

You will be invited to contribute ideas, co-design a manifesto for future audiences, and play an active role in shaping outdoor arts in your community.

By joining the Youth Panel you’ll gain:

  • Insight into the inner workings of outdoor art and how festivals are produced
  • Opportunities for paid festival assistant work.
  • Mentorship from creative professionals
  • Skills in planning, collaboration and audience engagement
  • A platform to share your ideas and celebrate your community
